From August 7 to 12, 2024, the First WFST Time-Domain Astronomy Summer School, organized by the Department of Astronomy at the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), was successfully held in Qianshan City, Anhui Province. The six-day summer school, focusing on current research hotspots, aimed to cultivate talent in time-domain astronomy. Renowned experts in related fields were invited to offer courses on popular topics in time-domain astronomy. A total of 57 students from various universities and research institutes across China participated in the program.
On the morning of August 8, 2024, the opening ceremony of the First WFST Time-Domain Astronomy Summer School took place. Professor Xu Kong, Professor at USTC and Chief Designer of the WFST, delivered a welcome address. He introduced the WFST to the attending students and expressed his hope that through their participation, they would deepen their interest and understanding of time-domain astronomy, eventually becoming future leaders in this field in China.
The summer school featured 27 lectures and 5 thematic discussion sessions. Researcher Hua Feng, Director of the Key Laboratory of Particle Astrophysics at the Institute of High Energy Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), delivered a lecture on X-ray Time-Domain Astronomy. Professor Xiaofeng Wang from Tsinghua University lectured on Supernovae. Researcher Tao An from the Shanghai Astronomical Observatory, CAS, presented on Radio Time-Domain Astronomy. Professors Zigao Dai, Tinggui Wang, and Junxian Wang from USTC gave lectures on Extreme Explosive Phenomena, Tidal Disruption Events, and Active Galactic Nuclei Variability, respectively. Tailored for senior undergraduate and graduate students at various academic stages and with diverse research interests, the instructors carefully designed their teaching methods and course outlines, enabling students to grasp the content easily. Furthermore, the arranged thematic discussion sessions facilitated ample interaction and discussions between students and instructors.
At noon on August 12, the closing ceremony of the summer school was held. Professor Ji'an Jiang from USTC first reviewed the students' activities during the program, including lectures, discussions, and extracurricular events. He expressed his gratitude for their active participation and awarded them completion certificates. Finally, he extended his best wishes to all students, hoping they would develop a deep passion for astronomy—an ancient yet continuously vibrant discipline—maintain their curiosity and desire to explore the mysterious universe, and persistently advance and forge ahead in the field of time-domain astronomy.
